Forget the iPhone, Get This Instead

January 31st, 2009 admin

g1 smart phone t mobile
Maybe you are anti-Apple or you just think the iPhone is over-rated. I don’t know. Whatever the reason, you will be happy to know there are alternatives, and great alternatives at that. Here’s one of my suggestions: The T-Mobile G1 Smartphone.

The long-awaited T-Mobile G1 smartphone combines full touchscreen functionality and a QWERTY keyboard with a mobile Web experience that includes many Google tools you’ve come to rely on with your PC, including Google Maps Street View Gmail, and one-touch Google search. It’s also the first phone to be powered by Google’s new open-source Android operating system, which offers an intuitive interface easily customizable home screen. You can also purchase optional software via the Android Market to personalize your G1 with a variety of software applications like games, social networking, and on-the-go shopping.

For Your Kitchen

stove range with 6 burners
Do you know how sometimes, while you’re cooking, (you might have guests or you’re just cooking for the family) – you feel like you need a couple of extra stove top burners. You think, “Gosh, if I just had another burner or two I could prepare all of the food to be ready at the same time!” Yea, you COULD prepare everything without those couple of extra burners but it would make life so much more convenient. Some of you KNOW what I’m talking, about, right?

You need this.

Late for the Sky

January 24th, 2009 admin

late for the sky jackson browneWhether or not you were around to listen to this masterpiece the first time around, it doesn’t matter. Jackson Browne, while he isn’t in the limelight in recent years, his music remains to feed the desires of music lovers worldwide.

Arguably his greatest, Late for the Sky is Jackson Browne’s third album, which pursues Browne’s continuing self-analysis while touching on territory normally off limits to the intrepid musician. The main title track involves the effects of a dead relationship and was featured in Martin Scorcese’s film, Taxi Driver. While For a Dancer stares at death straight on, Farther On explains the difficulties faced by people who live life vicariously through films, books and music. Before the Deluge presciently cautions the imminent environmental catastrophes heading our way. Yes, while obviously dark at times, it is wonderfully intimate, strikingly autobiographical, personal and evocative.

Dexter

January 21st, 2009 admin

dexter
Showtime has been coming out with incredibly original content in the form of ongoing series in the last few years; Weeds, being one of my faves. On the darker side of things, there’s Dexter, which is no less great but is much more serious, yet entertaining nonetheless. Sam Graham describes it best:

“An interesting and original idea that’s very skillfully executed, Showtime’s Dexter is never less than watchable, often quite compelling, and sometimes thoroughly riveting. As the 12 episodes from the show’s first season (packaged here in a four disc set) reveal, it’s also the epitome of “high concept,” a kind of Silence of the Lambs for the C.S.I. generation. Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.’s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as an blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a “positive” direction; and so, having captured these evildoers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers. But there’s more–much more, as it turns out. By his own description, Dexter is “a monster,” an empty shell who fakes all human interactions and admits to no real feelings for anything or anyone, including his foster sister (Jennifer Carter) and his nominal girlfriend (Julie Benz), a former crack addict and battered spouse who’s as uninterested in sex as he is. There’s an explanation for Dexter’s weirdness, of course, one so deep and traumatic that even he isn’t aware of it. It’s gradually revealed over the course of the season as he and the cops (who include Erik King, Lauren Velez, and David Zayas, all first-rate) track down the so-called “Ice Truck Killer,” a fellow monster whose grisly m.o. both fascinates and taunts our hero, leading to a genuinely shocking and squirm-inducing finale. Dexter can be a bit arch, with an ironic, too-hip-for-the-room tone that get a little old. Still, it’s a safe bet that anyone who views this first season will be salivating for the second. Extras include audio commentary on two episodes, a featurette about real-life blood spatter analysis, and a variety of DVD-ROM items.”
